Head Voices is written from the idea that big dreams gain power if you keep them to yourself and instead let them flow through your actions. The idea took on a new meaning while journeying for four months; first in Brasil & then Mali, west Africa.
Eagerly wandering foreign shores, field recorder in hand, I was welcomed & granted privileges on account of efforts to speak the local musical language. A one-hour guitar lesson could easily turn into a day of playing music and eating with the whole family. This brought me close to all sorts of characters and my mind would inevitably start comparing our fortunes, or Head Voices - those things we dream and say only to ourselves.
The song addresses the tension between my fortunes & ambitions and those of my hosts, featuring imagery and fragments of my interactions and (mis)-understandings. Head Voices quotes west African melody, Brazilian rhythm and in the music video shares scenes from this four month voyage around the global south.
lyrics
Our love our love is one thing we never had in this whole time here
Our love our love is nothing to fear, you don't feel pain like I do
The olden tales of sinners, scare fresh faces away with unsweetness, oh the unsweetness
Daggers everywhere you look, betray the wounds of battles avoided
Just say this name and don't forget
I wouldn't believe the time on your watch
You’ll lose your mind then find your soul, it’s really something if you grow old 'round here
Oh it’s so old around here
Just keep your dream to yourself
Keep your dream to yourself, dream to yourself
Keep a dream to yourself, dream to yourself
Just keep your dream to yourself
Our love our love is one thing we never had in this whole time
Now smash our glasses down, gather round, telling stories of great men, passed
This dirt is only matter displaced, the baby’s walking much to soon
Another martyr this world doesn’t need, all that you have is all that you give
Just keep your dream to yourself
Keep your dream to yourself, dream to yourself
Keep a dream to yourself, dream to yourself
Just keep your dream to yourself
Our love our love is one thing we’ll someday have in this whole time here
You’re a perfect song that has no end, I don’t suppose we’ll meet again
You go your way and I’ll go mine, somewhere into the great unknown
I can’t go home I won’t go home I can’t go I must go home now
I must go home now
Fare thee well
